Kolali ChurchKolali Church in Cairo is a Evangelical Presbyterian Church situated in a busy crowded part of Cairo. The congregation is very active in the community living the Christian way of life. The Church has many activities for the community including literacy classes, writing with computers and summer and after school outings for the youngsters in the community. Religious education for young and old in the congregation is also given and aid to underprivileged families is provided. The Pastor Rev. Emile Zaki has been at the Church for many years and has looked after his flock very well although he has now reached retiring age, the congregation are now faced with the daunting task of finding a new Pastor (your prayers for them at this time would be appreciated). Rev. Emile has also been the General Secretary of the Synod of the Nile since 2004 and the Synod is the oldest Presbyterian group in Egypt this all keeps him very busy. In November 2005 a group of 5 from Kolali-Glasgow Partnership were invited by Pastor Emile and the Synod of the Nile to join with the church in Cairo in celebrating 150 years of the Presbyterian Church in Egypt. Unknown to them (and dressed more like backpackers!) they were also to accompany the many dignitaries from abroad on their visits to the following places / events over 3 days:- (1) An audience with the Grand Imam of Egypt (who is considered head of all Muslims, similar to the Pope - a very wise, peace-seeking leader). (2) A meeting with the Principal of AI Azhar University, the largest in the world with 440,000 students and 61 faculties. (3) Participants in a Symposium on the interpretation of Scripture by American, German and Egyptian speakers. (4) Visitors to the following very well respected institutions, all run by the Synod:- Ramses College and New Ramses College the best schools in Cairo, a medical centre (opening of their new cardiology intensive care unit), a geriatric home (run by the women of the church) and CEOSS the social development arm of the church. (5) A lunch followed by a meeting discussing the future involvement and support by overseas churches for the continuing work in Egypt. (6) A cruise on the Nile with a lovely buffet lunch. (7) A 3 hour celebration service in a large church to which the Imam, government dignitaries and overseas visitors were all invited. 1700 people from 12 countries took part. Ada Younger previously Minister of Dennistoun Central Church Glasgow and her husband George came over for 4 days and Ada spoke a few words on behalf of Glasgow Presbytery. |
